5 Tips for Preventing Heatstroke

In this increasingly hot and humid New York summer, people are in danger of heatstroke. With symptoms such as dizziness, nausea and vomiting, headaches, racing heartbeat, rapid breathing, confusion, and slurred speech, heatstroke is a serious medical emergency.

  1. Rest
    If you are feeling tired, give yourself the chance to take a break. Don’t push yourself too hard. Remember, the symptoms of heatstroke include cramps or muscle weakness, dizziness, shallow breathing, and headaches. So, if you feel any of these symptoms, make sure to rest even if it’s just for a few minutes.
  2. Avoid Wearing Excess Clothing
    Whether you are headed out or staying indoors, avoid wearing excess clothing. Too much clothing in this hot temperature can hamper your body’s ability to sweat and cool itself down. As much as possible, wear light and loose-fitting clothing.
  3. Stay Hydrated
    Drink plenty of fluids, especially if you are outside and participating in different physical activities. However, while staying hydrated is important, it doesn’t mean that any drink is okay. In fact, you should avoid drinking excessive amounts of soda, caffeine, sugary juices, and alcohol – all of which can contribute to dehydration.
  4. Exercise During Cooler Periods of the Day
    If you are a big fan of exercising, you need to be extra careful during hot summer months. If possible, limit your exercise routine and other forms of activity during cooler periods of the day. You should consider exercising either early in the morning or in the evening.
  5. Avoid Staying Outside
    In extreme temperatures, try to avoid going outside or staying under direct sunlight. If going out is unavoidable, try to limit your exposure to the heat. If possible, stay inside preferably in air-conditioned environments.
